Anti-Islanding Testing

As an owner of a solar system in the ACT, you are required to ensure that the anti-islanding protection on your inverter is safe and compliant.

To do this, you will need to engage a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited contractor to perform Anti-Islanding Testing. This test must be completed every 5 years.

We are CEC qualified and have extensive experience as a PV solar system installer. We charge $135 (incl. GST) per solar inverter, find out more below.

Islanding can cause many problems, including increased risk of equipment damage, voltage fluctuations, power surges, and even electrical fires.

These issues can be hazardous to electrical network workers expecting that section to be isolated/de-energised.

What is Anti-Islanding(Periodic) Testing?

When EVO Energy writes that testing your photovoltaic (PV) inverter is due, this is what their letter is all about.

Anti-Islanding Testing is essential in electrical power systems and renewable energy sources, such as PV solar systems, that generate power using inverters.

Islanding refers to a situation in which a portion of the power grid becomes electrically isolated but continues to produce power due to local power generation. In other words, the power grid section behaves like a small "island" in the larger power network.

Why?  Anti-Islanding Testing is essential because it ensures the power system is designed and configured to detect and prevent islanding. It involves testing the system to determine if it can identify when the power grid is isolated and cut off power to prevent the islanding from continuing.

All inverters installed in Australia must have anti-islanding protection to prevent uncontrolled islanding. In the ACT , Evo Energy mandates that every inverter connected to their network undergo testing every five years to ensure compliance with this requirement. Evo Energy will notify you when your inverter testing is required.

Are we qualified?  We are a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited PV solar system installer. We have the qualifications and expertise to conduct the periodic anti-islanding testing outlined by Evo Energy.

What will we do?  Depending on how many PV inverters you have, we will spend 15-30 minutes capturing the required data and testing your system. We will prepare and submit the necessary documentation to fulfil your Evo Energy testing obligations upon completing the required testing. You will not need to do anything except pay for the testing service.

System safety and network integrity. Conducting the anti-islanding test ensures that your solar system complies with safety regulations and operates in a manner that minimises risks for electrical workers and potential damage to equipment.

The standard price for a residential solar system anti-islanding test within the ACT is $135.00 (including GST) per solar inverter.

Payment can be made via bank transfer, cheque, or cash. We can negotiate pricing based on your specific needs if you have multiple solar inverters that require testing.
